Technically, alcohol refers to any of a series of hydroxyl compounds, the simplest of which are derived from saturated hydrocarbons, have the general formula CnH2n+1OH. However, when used generically, typically refers to isopropynol (isopropyl alcohol) or ethanol (ethyl alcohol).

Alcohol is used in Special effects makeup as a degreaser, a drying agent, a cleansing agent, an antiseptic, and a solvent.

Alcohol may be used as a solvent in Airbrush makeup, though this must be done with extreme care. Atomizing high concentrations of alcohol can be extremely flamable and should only be done in a well-ventilated, well marked area, that must be kept free of open flame.
